As a child, Brendan grew up in the “big” city of Timmins, Ontario. If you’ve been there before, you’d know there isn’t much to do, so he involved himself with sports. Brendan started off playing hockey and soon realized, when forced to choose between two sports, skiing was his biggest passion. Coincidentally, Kamiskotia Ski Resort started a Freestyle Ski Team the same year. He was 11-years-old when he began competing in Freestyle Skiing with Moguls and Aerials. Being as far away as he was from all of the events, Brendan was forced to travel down south often to participate in different ski circuits. At the ripe age of 15, after placing 1st in Aerials and 3rd in Moguls at Jr. Nationals, Brendan moved to Barrie and lived with a friend’s family in order to ski for the Ontario Freestyle ski team.
After two and a half years of being on the Ontario Team, Brendan entered his first semi-pro park and pipe event and won. This win was a deciding factor to leave moguls and aerials to dedicate all of his time and passion into park and pipe. He ventured to Mount Tremblant to enter another semi- pro event and won with the first ever landed or attempted Switch Double Backflip (2001).Just like that, his professional ski career began.
During this exciting time, Brendan was traveling around the world and was lucky enough to live the skier’s dream through payment by sponsorship and photo/video shoots with Freeze, Skier, Freeskier, Powder Magazine, Level 1 Productions, and Matchstick Productions among others. Unfortunately due to multiple injuries, his professional career was cut short after 5 years.
After being forced to return home for another surgery, Brendan decided to return to school and enrolled in the Snow Resort Management and Operations Program at Georgian College. He graduated with honors along with three years of Physical Fitness and Leader Management at Cambrian College.
After recovering from surgery, Brendan was offered the opportunity to coach the Ontario Park and Pipe team, which then lead into seven years of running the Freestyle Ski Program at Beaver Valley Ski Club, along with working for Freestyle Skiing Ontario as one of their head coaches and main qualifier in the province.
Even though he was no longer able to ski at the same level as before, Brendan has been able to pursue a career in the sport as a coach and mentor for almost 15 years, embracing his passion for the industry.
